Have a chronic pain condition?

see how advanced massage techniques may help reduce your pain.

Chronic pain is a persistent state that can significantly impact people’s quality of life. While various treatments are available, massage therapy has emerged as a highly effective option for managing chronic pain.

In my blog, I will explore how massage can help towards alleviating chronic pain, and how the advanced Clinical Massage therapy techniques I’ve learnt at the Jing Massage Institute can play a pivotal role in reducing pain and increasing range of motion.

Personally, I have seen clients through my clinic with various long standing injuries, chronic pain and lacking range of motion. Although there feels like no hope, or maybe a long journey ahead, I believe its never to late to celebrate the smallest of goals in your wellness journey to being in less pain and improving that range of motion.

Understanding Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is defined as pain that is with you for a long period of time. It can stem from various conditions, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, neck and back injuries, headaches among others. Traditional treatments often involve medications and physical therapy or even surgery, but many individuals seek alternative therapies to complement these methods. Often you also find that people live with their pain and never get the answers they want about how to move forward or manage their pain better during their day to day lives.

The Role of Massage Therapy in Chronic Pain Management

  1. Reducing Muscle Tension: Chronic pain often causes muscle tightness and discomfort.  Massage helps to relax these muscles, reducing those tensions.

  2. Stimulating Endorphin Production: Massage can trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, providing pain relief and aiding relaxation.

  3. Enhancing Flexibility and Range of Motion: Regular massage can improve flexibility and increase range of motion, helping you to move more freely and with less pain overall.

  4. Biopsychosocial model: supporting clients with that mind body approach, making sure they feel heard and understanding all factors as to what has lead them to be in pain

  5. Cheerleading clients/aftercare advise: Simple gestures such as a top tip for client to do at home, aftercare advise for client to take away and support them day to day or even celebrating the small wins in clinic. This makes a huge difference to clients when they start to see the results.

WHAT HAVE I BEEN UP TO?

I am just about three quarters of my ACMT course this year at Jing massage and what a journey it has been. It has opened my eyes to so much and I have felt challenged, heard, supported, and celebrated! Jing offers an extensive program of the ACMT course, designed to equip therapists with the skills they need to effectively manage and treat chronic pain.

I have loved the online content, going further in depth about trigger point pain patterns, acupressure points, after care advice and creating that biopsychosocial model clients feel heard and supported from all angles. What I have enjoyed even more than all of this is putting it into practise. Seeing real life differences in client’s range of motions, thoughts and beliefs about their pain, pain decreasing, or even just feeling more relaxed post treatment.

Often, we speak of relaxation as the main goal for our treatments but there is so much more we could be working on. Massage really isn’t one size fits all and if Jing has taught me one thing it would be just that. Catering treatments to each individual client as they work through their chronic pain is so important and I feel honoured to have been on some of my clients’ journeys as we work together to get them out of pain and into that better motion.
